Can long nails impact your dog's arthritis?

If you have ever wondered whether long nails can actually cause your dog pain, the answer is a resounding yes.

Regular nail trims are about so much more than protecting your floors or preventing accidental scratches during a cuddle. For a dog, especially one navigating the challenges of arthritis, proper foot care is a cornerstone of a compassionate health management plan.

A German Shepherd mix lies on a wooden floor, looking directly at the camera. The mood is calm and neutral with a white and gray coat.

Our dogs rely on the natural structure of their paws to move through the world with ease. When toenails are left to grow too long, they alter the entire biomechanics of the foot.

  • Altered Alignment: Long nails constantly push against the floor, forcing the toes upward and backward. This shifts your dog’s natural posture and gait.

  • Strained Joints: To compensate for this unnatural angle, your dog has to shift their weight improperly. This places a quiet, continuous strain on the joints in their paws, legs, and even their spine.

  • Accelerated Wear and Tear: Over time, this unnatural compensation can accelerate joint deterioration, worsening arthritis or even causing it to develop in otherwise healthy toes.

For an older animal already managing joint stiffness, this extra pressure can turn a simple walk across the room into a painful chore. Furthermore, long nails act like stilts, preventing your dog’s pads from making secure contact with the ground. This makes it incredibly difficult for them to find traction on slick floors, leading to slips that can cause further injury and anxiety.

How to maintain my Dogs nails?

We know that nail trims can sometimes feel daunting for both you and your companion. However, with patience, the right tools, and a gentle approach, it can become a calm routine that deepens your bond.

  • Consider a Nail Grinder: Many pet parents find that using a Dremel tool or nail grinder is easier and gentler than traditional clippers. It allows you to gradually take down the length with less risk of accidentally cutting into the sensitive "quick."

  • Go Slowly with High-Value Treats: While it is wonderful to introduce foot handling at a young age, please know that older dogs can absolutely learn to tolerate and even enjoy this routine. Use plenty of patience and their favorite high-value treats to create a positive, safe association.

  • Don't Forget the Paw Hair: If your dog has long hair or "feathers" growing between their pads, trimming that fur regularly is just as important. Keeping the pads clear gives them the natural grip they need to feel secure on hard surfaces.

It may take weeks or even months of slow, loving practice for your dog to feel completely comfortable with nail care, but the reward of seeing them walk with ease and comfort is entirely worth it. If trimming at home simply isn't feasible, scheduling regular visits with a trusted professional groomer is a wonderful way to ensure your dog gets the care they need.
